Fatty Crab

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Last week I was in New York City. I ate twice at Fatty Crab. It’s been around for a while, but remains one of my standby favorites. The food is full of flavors I only get to taste when I eat there. As I joked to my friends I met there, the wait staff recognizes me and I don’t even live in the city. Not sure if that’s a bad sign or a good sign! Below a picture of some amazing noodles that were wide, served kind of rolled up with squid, shrimp, and some kind of amazing cured pork. Yum. I’ll get this blogging thing down soon, unfortunately I did not write down the name of this dish…

Comfort Food

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

About 5 years ago I took a year off. The travels began in February in Paris where it snowed for the first time in 15 years. It was cold, I had a big sleeping bag of a jacket looking as unfashionable as you can in the most fashionable city in the world. I was warm though. Walking the streets of a somewhat recently internationalized Paris, I found an amazing Japanese Ramen restaurant. I had to talk myself out of going everyday, it was instant warmth when you walked in. The steam from all the noodles, the small space, the bustling. Japanese noodles became my new comfort food.

Last night in was getting cold, it was late, and we at Mockingbird headquarters were hungry. Japanese noodles, chicken broth, a poached egg, and an old standby cornbread did just the trick. It was full on comfort.

The Breslin

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Thanks to my cousin Tim, we ended up at The Breslin last week for what turned into a pre-Thanksgiving gorgefest. It is a new place in the lobby of the Ace hotel run by the Spotted Pig chefs. The menu is full of pork in many, many forms. There is onion and bone marrow soup. It was an amazing meal. We started with the terrine platter which from left to right was, head cheese, rabbit, pork, and guinea.(Sorry for the horrible pictures, I had only my fancy phone.)

Tim and I got the belly and mashed potatoes for 2. It could serve 4 and was the biggest slab of pork belly I’ve ever seen. This was one of those dishes that proved sometimes food is the best thing on the planet to consume.
